“Transience” Alex Carroll Solo Exhibition

Transience” — Alex Carroll Solo Exhibition

Date: 6 23 May, 2017

Exhibition Date: 8 April – 4 May, 2017After having received the MFA degree from RMIT University in Melbourne, American contemporary visual artist Alex Carroll has been living in Shanghai for the past 10 years, carrying on his artistic practice while instructing young emerging artists.

His latest “Transience” series are recent drawings that continue his examination of movement as it relates to time and the body. This theme, which he has explored since 2006, has been further informed by his experience of living 10 years in Shanghai, a city that is constantly evolving.

The work aims to bring attention to our natural state—to be in motion. This “Transient” series of drawings utilizes intentionally blurred, digital photographs as a starting point for expressing this collective experience, and to capture the ephemeral nature of our human existence in a city that is enveloped in constant change. The combined movement of the subject and the camera distort time and seizes fleeting moments. These moments, the artist believes, are worthy of acknowledging, worthy of revisiting, and worthy of being suspended from time.

Charcoal and pastel are used to allow for immediacy in regards to the mark, however it is a long and arduous task of constructing a large drawing. This duality that is experienced in the creative process further connects his work to these ideas of time and movement, and reconciling the past with the present. Through the process of creating these large works, the artist intends to lure time towards a point of intrusion; slowing down and immersing the viewer in the layers of frozen instances as evident by the process and the blurred, distorted subjects.

Alex Carroll
