2017 “欢乐时刻” Takeru Toyokura专访 | Interview with Takeru Toyokura

Where does your inspiration come from? Why do describe the world through children’s eyes ? I get inspiration from world-wide news. I believe children have pure mind and they do not completely belong to the society established by the adults. They can point out the problems from the society that we haven’t noticed. I always consider the issue from the viewpoint of the children.
What do you think of your childhood ? Does your childhood links to your art creation ? I do not think my childhood is related to my artworks. I did not have big problems and bad experience during my childhood. However I always try to give a wider perspective and to image how children see this world nowadays.

Visually, you represent your works in a playful cartoonish way filled with full of imagination. What’s your concept behind these seemingly simple images ? I want to express the world between daily life and non-daily life. 9.11tragedy had a great effect on my work. The day-to-day life (I saw the movie about the incident) suddenly changed to a non-daily life. I am always thinking the gap between them. I do not know which one is the real world, I place the gap into my work between colorful and joyful children around the bad or mysterious situation.

What do you think of contemporary art development in Japan ? Does cartoon culture largely influence Japanese contemporary art ? Most Japanese read comic book from a young age and watch many animation. So Comic has  influenced on many Japanese. It also has great impact on contemporary art. In particular, Takashi Murakami uses it obviously, apart from him, many Japanese draw comic art and there are many good pieces.

In japan, comic artists are more famous than Murakami or Nara.

How do you see the future of young generation in Japan ? Many young people are interested in comic art. 100,000 people visit comic festival in Tokyo Bigsite. So comic artists can have success in Japan, while Japanese contemporary artists are quite difficult to have success in Japan, although there are many good young contemporary artists. As Japanese contemporary art market is very small and is not well experienced yet. Nowadays older Japanese buy old traditional Japanese art for their apartment.

What’s you next step of your art creation ? I want to make more chaotic images to express the current world.
