Interview with Li Li

N: Your signature cartoonish “Lili Girl” has been well recognized and also being very popular. Does this “Lili Girl” come from your own life experience? How would you describe yourself as one of the “Lili Girls”?

Li Li:The “Lili Girl” was created in 2006. I keep attempting to create my own unique artistic symbol to speak for my art. As a woman, when I was turned from a girl to a mother of a girl, I paid more respect to my life and I started to think, what can I leave for my daughter in life? Hence, “Lili Girl” was born at this special moment in my life. The “Lili Girl” is defined by a big round face with two big watering eyes and the little “O” mouth shape. I am one of these “Lili Girls”, playing different roles, sharing different moods and life stories. The“Lili Girl” has many different types and characters, they look so real in life.

N: This exhibition titled “Girl Power” talks about the qualities of “strong will”, “independence”, “fearless”, “never give up and compromise” of modern females. The painting “1116” was created on the day that you won the lawsuit of trademark tort, what kind of messages and feelings you want to convey from this painting?

Li Li:“1116” is a souvenir of a particular date, on this date, when I heard the news that I finally won the lawsuit while working in my studio, I was so emotional and cried loudly, as if a little lost girl eventually found her mum and was brought back home! I saw the clear blue sky and green mountains in front of my eyes! It was indeed a long and touch experience. Although it is only a beginning instead of an end, I keep my faith in the following steps to fight against all the copies of my “Lili Girls” and my soul of art. Just like the girl in the painting, holding a hammer, from her big eyes, we can see strong and brave, determined and hope! I sincerely hope everyone will respect the copy rights from the artists!

N: How do you see your “Lili Girl” with comparison of the Japanese cartoonish girls?

Li Li:Personally, I think the “Lili Girl” is quite different from the Japanese cartoonish girls from the way I draw and the soul of the characters in my art. In general speaking, the drawing and the stroke lines of Japanese cartoonish girls are rather strict and detailed, in the ambiance and the background of illustration and animation, while the “Lili Girl” is depicted in a more abstract and free way, they are more real and emotional. “Lili Girl” represents the oriental poetry and imagination like the traditional Chinese ink paintings.

N: Being an artist, a mother of two young children, how do you keep on working on your art? Did the birth of your second daughter has any influence on your work?

Li Li:I always believe art is from the true heart. My first daughter made the birth of the “Lili Girl”, it’s the life gift and responsibilities for my children. They encourage and inspire me in my art creation. Even tough I’ve been quite tied up with my baby girl, but I will adjust my time schedule according to her needs, trying to make a balance between her and my work. The birth of my second daughter made me stronger and more matured with more patience, she has brought me plenty of joy, therefore, the colours of my paintings are more pleasant, vivid and brighter.

N: Could you please talk about your future steps?

Li Li:I think the future “Lili Girls” will be more diverse, more dimensional! I will use various media to present the “Lili Girl” apart from sculptures and paintings. I will also show different angles of the “Lili Girl” face , just like “In the Mirror”, I started to show the profile of the “Lili Girl”. I hope my “Lili Girl” will bring not only the visual pleasure but also the spiritual pleasure and consonance to the audience, to enable the audience feel power and joy in life. I will keep on moving forward!
