Artist-Li Li

1.This solo exhibition is your “visual diary” of 2020. What kind of emotion and message do you want to convey to the viewers through this “diary”?

Li Li: 2020 is a special year to me. I remember that 2020 was often mentioned in my textbooks when I was in school, so I have always been looking forward to the year of 2020. I went to Tiananmen Square to watch the flag raising ceremony on New Year’s Day to celebrate its arrival, I have a lot of memories for 2020. Through this “visual diary”, I hope that the audience will remember the panic and the anxiety, the strength and the dedication, the fearlessness and the tenacity that we have been through, I also hope this exhibition can give everyone comfort, reflection and cohesion.

2.How is your life in 2020? What kind of impact that Covid 19 pandemic has on your life and what changes does it bring to your “Li Li Girl ”?

Li Li:There are many changes in my life in 2020. Although these changes are not all pleasant, they have given a lot of inspiration to my artworks, such as “Time” and “The Dream of Chinese Flowering Crabapple”. The outbreak of the Covid-19 has changed the life paths of all of us and also changed “Li Li Girl”. Therefore, “Li Li Girls” put on masks and walked to the frontline of the battle against the Covid-19 bravely, trying their best to protect our lives. Through this exhibition, I pay the highest homage to these new “Li Li Girls”, and I am deeply moved by their tremendous efforts. My life gets closer to my family and to my “Li Li Girls”.

3.When was “Li Li Girl” created? How does she relate to your life and personality?

Li Li:“Li Li Girl” was born alongside the birth of my first daughter, which was in 2006. I believe the experience of a girl growing up to become a mother will bring enormous changes both in emotions and in the roles of our life for females. Mother and daughter are both individuals and related to each other closely. At that time, I wanted to use “Li Li Girl” to commemorate my youth and to accompany my daughter’s growth. I used my own image and life as the original idea to create “Li Li Girl”. She is not only the shadow of my life, but also the dream in my heart!

4.With the recent global launch of the “Me Too” movement, feminism has drawn great attention from the society. What do you think of the living conditions of female artists nowadays? Do you mind being called a “female artist”?

Li Li: Honestly, I don’t know about this “Me Too” movement, but being a woman, independence and strength, self-respect and self-love are very important. Women’s living conditions sometimes are changed under the influence of the general social environment. I think the respects for women is a reflection of the overall progress of a society as well as the improvement of the male’s quality. In the current social environment, women’s self-identity, their wisdom and self-confidence have roused the power of inner strength, which gradually eliminates the semantic discussion of their gender. Female art has been paid attention and has been recognized through its own uniqueness. I don’t mind being called a “female artist”.

5.In this exhibition, “The Tree of Hope” is a purely landscape piece without the image of “Li Li Girl”, is this your new direction?
Li Li:Although this is a new try, I have already started with it a few years ago. It is the first time to share with the public in this exhibition. “The Tree of Hope” is a clip from the process that the seeds of hope germinating and growing. One day, “The Tree of Hope” will grow into a huge tree, surrounded by hummingbirds, fish and insects, or even has delicious fruits. Therefore, the work “The Tree of Hope” looks forward to a beautiful and happy future! As for “Li Li Girl”, she will still be my main direction in the future.
